UJALA-I

Parents Voice Association

The Parents Voice Association (PVA) was founded in 1984 by a group of 10 like-minded parents of individuals with disabilities. Keeping in mind the well-being of their children with disabilities and the society at large, it was decided that an institution or NGO had to be established which would directly cater to the concerns of parents registered with the PVA.

UJALA-I

UJALA – School for Children with Special Abilities and Vocational Training Centre was built and established in 1986 by the Parents Voice Association, aimed at supporting and nurturing differently-abled children in a society that was unaware and unprepared to care for such individuals. UJALA currently caters to individuals with Down syndrome, Autism and other intellectual and developmental disabilities. It is one of the oldest facilities in Karachi today.

UJALA maintains a fleet of 7 vans, each operated by trained drivers and stocked with essential supplies. Our presence has grown significantly over the last four decades, now encompassing all areas of Karachi including Lyari, Kemari, Saddar, PECHS, Shah Faisal, Malir, and Baldia Town. The logistics of our transportation are managed with the utmost care, involving daily route planning and continuous real-time tracking.

Vocational Training

Vocational Training

UJALA’s vocational training program is an essential part of our curriculum to ensure an independent future for our students.UJALA’s Vocational Training program currently has modules for Block Printing, Arts & Crafts, Cooking, Gardening and Tailoring which cater to individuals with disabilities of all ages. Products made through these classes are later sold at events to raise funds for the organization.

Early learning program

Early learning program

Our Montessori classes cater to children with disabilities, providing a personalized and immersive learning experience. At UJALA, we have a team dedicated to incorporating all modern learning techniques including audio-visual learning materials to efficiently implement each individualized educational program. This holistic method adjusts to each child's unique learning style, encouraging independence and interest in learning. Additionally, with a great emphasis on community engagement at an earlier stage, UJALA works towards building a more inclusive learning environment.

Family Counseling

Family Counseling

PVA’s foundation begins with equipping parents with all the necessary knowledge and tools in understanding the life challenges of having a child with disabilities. Our team of trained psychologists engage with parents on a daily basis to help them overcome stigmas in society. Additionally, UJALA arranges monthly family support groups.

Job Placement

Job Placement

UJALA believes in fostering financial independence within individuals with disabilities so they are able to integrate into the society. UJALA collaborates with various organizations to develop a joint program to equip our students with the necessary tools to create employment opportunities in the workplace. Many individuals registered with us have been placed at Rajby Industries – A leading organization in the Denim Textile and Apparel industry of Pakistan, whilst some are also employed privately and also within UJALA’s Administration staff as well.

Therapies

UJALA realizes the importance of the first few years of a child’s life in respect of intellectual and physical development. For individuals with disabilities, the importance of Early childhood Intervention is crucial. Speech Therapy, Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy enable children with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities to enable individuals with disabilities to improve upon their functioning skills, independent daily living tasks and restore them to their best possible selves.

Speech Therapy

Speech Therapy

UJALA works jointly with Ziauddin University’s College of Speech Language & Hearing Sciences in conducting speech therapy sessions and assessments. Speech therapy is used to treat language disorders, speech disorders and swallowing problems, most common in individuals with Down syndrome and Cerebral Palsy.

Physical Therapy

Physical Therapy

UJALA has a team of trained physiotherapists who assess and create treatment plans that are targeted toward the improvement and development of gross motor skills whereby students are trained to be able to sit, walk, run and balance independently.

Occupational Therapy

Occupational Therapy

All students at UJALA are engaged in Occupational therapy which aims to improve the fine motor skills and the muscle movement within the hands, wrists and fingers of individuals with disabilities. Occupational therapy helps a child adapt to new environments and textures, while aiding in their daily living tasks.

Behavior Therapy

Behavior Therapy

UJALA has partnered with the Centre for Growing Minds to work with students with neuro-developmental disabilities who exhibit behavioral concerns. It is important for us to ensure that behavior is learned – good or bad. Quite often children with disabilities do not grow up in personal or academic environments that are conducive to their growth. Hence, our intervention through behavior therapy is to change their maladaptive behavior by re-learning what’s correct through modern techniques.

Sensory Room

Sensory Room

The sensory room at UJALA provides the students with a therapeutic space that helps calm their nerves by stimulating and engaging their senses. The space is designed with all safety measures and equipments in place, ensuring that students are able to fully interact with and explore the environment without any risk.

Music Therapy

Music Therapy

The students show strong involvement when it comes to the language of music. The goal is to improve communication, interaction and self-expression. It helps stimulate cognitive functioning to showcase emotions and to positively impact the mood and memory of the student. Weekly classes are held at UJALA to also help students showcase their talent.
